of the Theoretical Instituts
1959 – 2009
Chronicle
- 1959
- The library comes into being as a part of the Pharmacological Institute of the Academy
of Medicine in Magdeburg. The first books are arriving in spring. The first full-time
librarian starts working on 1st November.
- 1961
- Further preclinical institutes are forming, so that the library's competences extend over
the body of literature of the Institute of Physiology and the Physiological Chemical
Institute. That new cooperative library is called “Gemeinsame Bibliothek Theoretischer
Institute”.
- 1979
- The Institute of Neurobiology and Brain Research (INH) is forming as a new institute of
the Academy of Sciences of the GDR (AdW) and contributing its collection, which
came out of the library of the the AdW Research Center for Molecular Biology and
Medicine in Berlin-Buch nowadays Max-Delbrück-Centrum.
On 1st September Wolfgang Loew is hired as the new head of the Gemeinsame
Bibliothek to build up an information centre.
- 1981
- The enormous amount of the collection's expansion makes it necessary to extend the
library's staff.
- 1987/88
- The INH and the Academy of Medicine conclude their cooperation agreement in the
field of scientific information and librarianship.
From now on the library's collection is cataloguized with the help of a software which
was created by Dr. Bernd Blobel based on dBASE.
The current library's residence in the Pharmacological Institute can no longer hold the
growing library's stocks. That's why the decision to relocate the library to the new
under-construction building of the INH is made.
- 1990
- On German Unity Day the Common Library opens its gates at its new place in the INH.
- 1992/93
- In legal succession of the former institutions the Leibniz Institute for Neurobiology
(IfN), founded on 1st January 1992 and the Medical Faculty of the Otto-von-Guericke
University continue a successful cooperation.
- 1995 -
1998
- First electronic journals are subscribed. They extend the holdings of printed journals.
The library's catalogue is available via Internet.
The library joins the Common Library Network GBV (Gemeinsamer
Bibliotheksverbund).
- 2009
- The library's collection is equipped with barcodes. PICA software for automated lending
provided by GBV is introduced.
- Prospect
to 2011
- The Leibniz Institute like the library relocates to a new modern building.
