Neuroprostheses

Head:

Our main interest is to understand the nature of perception, learning and memory, and in particular how the neural physiology of the brain mediates these functions.

We pursue this goal by having human and animal subjects exposed to controlled situations of perception, learning and memory while we simultaneously observe physiological activity from their brains. In addition to this, our animal subjects allow us to directly stimulate their brains electrically, while we try to infer their perceptions from behavioral analysis.

Based on previous research of ours and others (the giants' shoulders on which we stand) we think that, with this aim in mind, among the many brain systems the cerebral cortex is the most promising structure to study and the use of electrophysiological techniques on various spatial scales in the awake performing subject the most auspicious experimental approach.
