The Behavioral Pharmacology Group investigates learning and memory by means of behavioral and pharmacological methods in order to find out brain mechanisms of learning-induced neuronal plasticity. In accordance with the interdisciplinary character of the Leibniz Institute for Neurobiology, the group develops different paradigms for the study of learning and memory in animals, mostly in rodents, suitable for an effective cooperation with other departments and groups of the institute. In these investigations, a main approach is directed to higher forms of auditory learning (e.g. discrimination and categorization of complex acoustic stimuli) and hemispheric asymmetries related to speech perception in men. Furthermore, the group studies interrelationships between learning and memory and other behavioral parameters, such as emotion, motivation, motor activity, sensory function, sleep. On the other hand, certain neurotropic agents (e.g. agonists and antagonists at metabotropic glutamate receptors; interleukins and interleukin antagonists) are used as instruments to elucidate mechanisms of learning and memory.
